Are guns a good home security measure?

Ask any homeowner and they’ll tell you that at the top of their list of concerns is the safety and protection of their property and loved ones. Property related crimes, irrespective of the fluctuations in their statistical likelihood of occurrence, are an unfortunate reality. Since there is no foolproof way to prevent these crimes from occurring, one of the best things we can do is take steps to mitigate the likelihood of becoming a victim to one of them.

Although it might be tempting to go out and get a license and become a gun owner, the reality is that a gun isn’t going to be very effective when it comes to securing your premises. Furthermore, relying solely on a gun as a home security measure also has the following drawbacks:
  • They preclude definitive action until the very last minute
  • They are not usually a good preventative measure
  • You can misjudge/misinterpret a situation and wrongfully wound or kill someone
  • Pulling out a gun can escalate the situation resulting in a potentially more dangerous and deadly result
  • They are a hazard to have in the house, especially if you have kids, individuals with mental disabilities, or with violent tendencies
  • They will not provide protection for your entire premises
  • There are exceptions to the rule, including those with extensive training, military experience, qualified law enforcement and responsible gun owners with significant training and sound mind.
It can be seen that while owning a gun may make you feel more secure, that feeling is really just an illusion of safety. Owning a gun in and of itself is not a safety measure; on the other hand, installing a home security system is. Home security systems are designed to do just that: protect your home and its inhabitants. A home security system is designed to monitor your property whether you’re at home, out at work, or on vacation. This gives you the benefit of knowing that your property is being monitored even when you’re not physically present. In addition, you can choose to Install a Wide Range of Additional Security Equipment which most home security providers offer. For instance, surveillance cameras are an effective deterrent since no potential burglar is going to want to commit a crime which could be recorded and later used as evidence. In conclusion - A gun cannot call the police.
